Global explorers

Come with us on a journey around the world!

One of our expert education officers needs some help from your team of young explorers as they travel to a variety of world habitats.  Should we wear sunglasses in the Kalahari Desert?  Will a snorkel be required in the wetlands of the Pantanal?  It is all down to your team to decide as we attempt to observe some of the most incredible and unique species at FSZ.

So you want to be a Snow leopard...

Snow leopards are the ultimate hunters in their Himalayan habitats.  How well would your class survive high in the mountains?  This session compares how humans and snow leopards use their senses and aims to put participants in their paws for the day by exploring the threats against this truly majestic species.

Session duration: 30 mins

Session location: outdoors (next to snow leopard enclosure)

Bears picnic

This is no teddy bear’s picnic… We have two very hungry brown bears here at FSZ and we need to get their food prepped fast.  Our education team need some help from your class!  What food should go in the perfect bear feed bucket?  It is all down to your class to decide before they have a snack themselves and take a snooze in their own brown bear day bed.

Session Duration: 40 mins

Session Location: Begin in Education Centre (indoors) and finish at Brown Bear habitat (outdoors)

Man made vs. natural… This session provides an opportunity for your young learners to start exploring what makes the perfect habitat for many of our native species.  In this session they will investigate manmade surfaces and more natural plant beds to find out which is the better home for insects, spiders, millipedes, woodlice, and many other small animals.

Session Duration: 30 minutes – only offered during Summer (April – September)

What is an animal with a spine called?  What groups of animals are covered in scales? and what on earth is a mammal?  Join one of our education officers as they walk your class through the world of animal classification before putting their knowledge to the test out in the zoo…

Rainforests

Where in the world are the tropical rainforests?  What do they look like?  What lives in them?  Get your class enthusiastic about one of the most incredible and biodiverse habitats on earth!  This education officer led session involves lots of class participation as pupils discover why these forests are so important and how we can all do our bit to protect them.

Guided Tour

Can’t see a session that fits with what you class have been studying?  Don’t let this put you off organising a visit to FSZ.  We can organise a tour of the park, taking in some Five Sisters highlights.  Feel free to let us know the topics you have covered with your class and, where possible, we will be sure to include some relevant themes in a tour.
